Santana's debut album in 1969 which produced two signature songs, "Evil Ways" and "Soul Sacrifice" was released at the same Santana made an appearance at Woodstock.

Prior to the release of their first album Santana was merely an improvisational group or jam band if you will.

Even though Carlos was the star, he allowed the band to maintain their jam qualities in live performances and a good example would be the song "Soul Sacrifice", each member of the group had an opportunity to shine.
