The song's title is stemmed from the phrase "For those about to Die..." which comes from ancient Rome in which gladiators would fight to the death in the arena before each match, one of the combatants would always yell out to the high rulers: "Those who are about to die salute you."

Angus Young came up with the idea for the title when Bon Scott gave him a book about ancient Rome titled,' For Those About To Die, We Salute You' (Robert Graves).

The use of  cannons came into play when nearby rehearsals were going on in Paris for  the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana and cannons could be heard and were used to celebrate the wedding.
