RICE - An Alexandria man was arrested during a routine traffic stop for allegedly possessing counterfeit money.

Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck says the incident happened at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. He says a deputy noticed a car leaving Pine's Edge Grocery Stores parking lot without its lights on. The deputy made a traffic stop and saw the driver throw something out the window.

The driver was 53-year-old James Meyer.

During the traffic stop the deputy was notified by the Rice Police Department the vehicle matched the description of a car involved in a incident at the Rice Hardware Hank.

A short time later the Benton County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the  Pine's Edge Grocery Store saying Meyer tried to use counterfeit $100.

After further investigation deputies found the object Meyer threw out of his car was a tissue wrapped around multiple counterfeit bills.
