The Eagles, who made the state tournament for the second time in three seasons last year, are ranked fifth in the state in the inaugural poll. Apollo finished 23-6-2 in 2014-15 and defeated Breck 1-0 in overtime in the opening game of the state tournament before losing 2-0 to Hermantown in the semifinals.

The Crusaders fell 4-2 to the Eagles in the Section 6A final last season at the Municipal Athletic Center in St. Cloud in front of a sellout crowd, ending an excellent season with a record of 15-12-1. Cathedral opens the season as the ninth-ranked team in the state.

The Sartell Sabres are also in the top 20, ranked #19 in the state.
