The song was co-written by the band's singer-guitarist Mike Pinera and keyboardist Frank Konte. This was the only big hit for Blues Image. It was included on the group's 1970 album, "Open" Released in 1970, it shot up the charts, eventually reaching No. 4 in the USA and Canadian charts, making it Blues Image's first and only Top 40 hit. It reached No. 23 in Australia. Mike Pinera went on to form Iron Butterfly and later played in Alice Cooper's band. "Ride Captain Ride" was covered by Blood, Sweat and Tears and also the band Phish. When Comedy Central roasted William Shatner, they used "Ride Captain Ride as the introduction song for Shatner.
