Years ago, when working for a radio station in Orlando, I used to run into the guys from Deep Purple quite often.  We frequented the same club in town. Deep Purple used to come to Orlando every Winter and spend it recording and playing soccer. Anyway, one night my roommate had a party and a couple of the guys from Deep Purple happened to show up. I had rather a long conversation with bassist and band founder Roger Glover. I told him that when "Smoke on the Water" came out every band in town played it two or three times in a night. He laughed and said that they spent about six weeks working on "Highway Star" and had thrown together "Smoke on the Water" in about 45 minutes, just as a filler tune on the album. Needless to say it became their biggest hit ever. So, maybe simpler is better. Check out the video.
