This morning in the Attic we played some Rare Earth for you all. Rare Earth was the first all white band signed to Motown Records. When I was still a teenager, our next door neighbor at the lake was a nice lady named Elda. She used to tell me that her nephew, Mark Olson, was in the band Rare Earth. She said he used to spend a lot of time at her lake place when he was a kid and he used to run around with a coonskin cap on in the Summer.

Now, fast forward 20 years -- I'm working at a radio station in Orlando. I did a program every Sunday night called Orlando Locals, where I played music by local musicians. And one day I got a call about a local band that wanted me to play some of their stuff. The guy, on the phone, said his name was Mark Olson and he used to be in a band called Rare Earth. I said "Oh, yeah, I bet you also used to run around Lake Melissa with a coonskin cap on". Dead silence on the other end of the phone and then he said "Who the f**k is this?" We had a big laugh.

Small world. Sadly, he passed away soon after that.
