The direction of this film was in great hopes that it didn't seem to be compared to the Twilight series, however; there are similarities except this time the roles are reversed where the girl has the gift.

The film is loaded with big names, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum all of which have supernatural powers. I was disappointed with the lead role of newcomer Alice Englert (Lena) as I felt the acting was very weak and the male lead of Alden Ehrenreich (Ethan) was just above mediocre.

A supernatural love story set in the South, "Beautiful Creatures" tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers:, a young man longing to escape his small town, and a mysterious new girl. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town.

The story in itself was good and entertaining and I'd give it a 3 out of 5 as the acting wasn't really up to par but the storyline was good and could lead to sequels ( Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos). If you appreciate a good sci-fi type film you will enjoy what it has to offer.

Now playing at the Parkwood Cinemas, check the local listings for showtimes, the film is rated PG-13 and runs 124 minutes.
