Santana and Steely Dan Drummer Dennis Chambers Hospitalized
Dennis Chambers, a jazz-funk drumming legend who has also toured with Steely Dan and Santana among many others, has been hospitalized with an unspecified illness. Bootsy Collins, a bandmate of Chambers’ in Parliament-Funkadelic, confirms the news.
“Dennis Chambers is in intensive care,” Collins said via Facebook, “and they’re working on getting him off the respirator. They are filtering his liver, as it’s not functioning well.”
A highlight of Chambers’ recent performances with Santana has always been his ferocious drum solo during ‘Soul Sacrifice.’ He earlier toured with Steely Dan, appearing on 1995’s concert souvenir ‘Alive in America,’ and then formed Niacin in 1996 with Billy Sheehan of the Mr. Big and David Lee Roth bands. Chambers was in Parliament-Funkadelic from 1978-85.
