One of the consummate 'heels' of the bygone AWA Wrestling era, Maurice "Mad Dog" Vachon died in his Omaha home early this morning.

Canadian sports outlet Slam! reports that he was in "poor health for many years, much of it stemming from a 1987 hit-and-run accident, where Vachon was struck by a driver, which resulted in the amputation of his leg. Most recently, he battled memory issues."

His brother and ever-present tag-team partner Paul The Butcher confirmed the death.

Vachon was a member of the 1948 Canadian Olympic Wrestling team, and while in London for the competition, he met future AWA entrepreneur Verne Gange.

I found a great video that showcases classic Mad Dog as he spars verbally with partner Andre The Giant.
