Former Iron Maiden Vocalist: “The Sound Of The First Album Was F—ing Awful”

Hulton Archive

Although his tenure with the band lasted only for two albums, former Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno has always been proud of the time spent with the group. In a new interview he reminisces about his time with the band and admits that Iron Maiden’s self-titled debut album might have owed more to punk music than to heavy metal.

“Iron Maiden was always a heavy metal band with a punk kid, that was me,” Di’Anno tells Greek music site Rock Overdose. “ But the sound — oh, God — the sound of the first album was f—ing awful. Somebody should remix that. There were some of the best songs on the first album and on the second one. Somebody should do it because then it will sound even more fantastic with a really good sound behind it.”

In addition to sharing that he will be releasing two albums in the next year — one with the German group Architect to Chaos, the other with his band the Killers — Di’Anno also clarifies that he will not be retiring from the road anytime soon. This is in spite of a bad knee that has continued to plague the vocalist.

“I’m gonna get my knee fixed up at some point, because it’s absolutely an agony everyday with my bad knee as far as the concerts [go]. But it’s OK, ’cause they don’t wanna f—ing see me, they want to hear the voice.”
