Sounds almost too good to be true, right?  If it was coming from anyone else besides Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, I wouldn't put much stock in it. But Musk is a visionary and has the smarts and money to pull this off.

SpaceX, the privateer space company led by Musk is requesting permission from the government to build a space network of satellites.

What Musk plans to do is put a network of 4,425 satellites in space, plus in orbit spares, to blanket Earth with free WiFi for all. There are a few others that have a similar plan but not quite as big as Musk's.  Elon Musk estimates his project will cost about 10 billion dollars.

Such a system provide an alternative to cable, fiber optics and other terrestrial internet options currently available.

Free WiFi for all? How can you not like that idea?
