It’s usually pretty bad form to throw a big party for oneself, but when you’re Howard Stern and your 60th birthday bash draws a crowd of famous faces that includes classic rockers like Slash, John Fogerty and Aerosmith‘s Steven Tyler, you get a pass.

Billboard reports that the self-anointed King of All Media crowded New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom with well-wishers on Jan. 31, hosting a lengthy event that served as a birthday party as well as yet another dose of the famously frank radio that’s made Stern a star. Among the highlights: a lengthy interview with David Letterman, a roast-style comedy segment and tributes from a diverse array of celebrities that included Paul McCartney, Robert Downey, Jr., Rosie O’Donnell, Barbara Walters and Larry King.

And there was also music — lots of it, with an impressive list of rock-heavy guests that included Dave Grohl, Rob Zombie, the Black Keys, Jon Bon Jovi and John Mayer. Even acts more generally known for their pop leanings got in on the act; at one point, Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine joined Train (who served as the house band) for a guitar-heavy cover of Prince‘s ‘Purple Rain.’ Fogerty, introduced by yogurt pitchman and part-time Beach Boy John Stamos, tore through a brief set that included ‘Fortunate Son’ and ‘Bad Moon Rising.’

Tyler was involved in some of the party’s more memorable moments, including a version of the Aerosmith classic ‘Dream On’ with Slash, as well as the night’s finale, a rendition of ‘Walk This Way’ performed by Tyler, Grohl and Slash. “Here’s to hell,” Tyler quipped to Stern at one point. “May we have as much fun there as we have getting there!”
