Sounds like the producers of the Janis Joplin biopic have their Tony Award winning title character cast and may have now landed an Oscar nominated director behind the lens.

This past summer, I wrote that the production, tentatively titled Joplin had cast its star, Broadway actress Nina Arianda in the title role of Janis, the rights to the songs had been secured and it has been a labor of love for Executive Producer Peter Newman, but that there was no director attached to the film.

It was announced yesterday that Oscar nominated director Lee Daniels is apparently ready to sign on to head up the project. Lee Daniels directed Monster's Ball in 2001 that snagged Halle Berry an Oscar for Best Actress. Lee also directed the 2009 film Precious. Precious was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two. His latest work, The Paperboy is garnering rave reviews.

We know he can do fiction. I was wondering how he'll do with a film about a real, actual person, but something tells me he'll do just fine.

Production is slated to begin in early 2013.
