Jon Bon Jovi has had a rough few weeks, what with the shock of his college-aged daughter’s alleged heroin overdose and subsequent media frenzy, but give him credit — he’s going out of his way to be open and honest about the effects of the ordeal.

Bon Jovi reflected on the experience during a recent interview with the AP, admitting, “I’m shocked as much as the next parent with this situation. I had no idea.” He went on to describe the feelings of helplessness and confusion familiar to any parent: “I didn’t have any sisters. We bring home this girl the first day – now what? Where’s the manual? There’s no manual. So you bring her up the best you can, you surround her with hugs and kisses, and you know that she may eventually fall down.”

And now, admits Bon Jovi, comes the hard part. “You surround them with the best help and love, and move on. That’s where we’re at with it,” he explained. Describing his daughter as “a great kid at a cool school,” he tried to make sense of what happened, saying, “Everything about it is idyllic. She was doing great – then a sudden and steep decline. Hopefully we caught it when we did and that’s the end of it.”

Despite his hopes and best efforts, Bon Jovi knows the future is largely out of his control — and that he might have to cross this bridge again with his younger children: “Who knew? I’ve got three more to come.”
