The full force of Hurricane Sandy is being felt up and down the Eastern Seaboard as the eye made landfall around 7:02pm CST. In response to that event, NYC's main power supplier ConEd had plans for a systematic shut-down to some parts of lower Manhattan neighborhoods in order to protect underwater systems from flood damage. But shortly after those shut-downs began, a huge explosion was seen near or at the ConEd plant at E14th and FDR. This dramatic looping video shows the multiple explosions as they happen and the resulting darkness that encompasses far more of the city than planned. The flashes begin about 20 seconds in.
