Metal After Midnight: Hirax “Broken Neck”
Hirax was right in the mix when bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Exodus were moving the Trash/Speed genre into high gear. They never quite achieved the success of some of their peers, but in the Metal world they are still a name people know.
Frontman Katon W. De Pena has been the only consistent in the band over the years and many consider him the first Black man to succeed in Heavy Metal. They only put out a couple releases in the 80’s and broke up around 1990. But then that little thing called the internet came around and De Pena realized there was enough Metalheads around the world to put the band back together.
They have had a second career going now and continue to tour and put out music. De Pena is considered by many to be ground-breaking and an ambassador for Metal to many nations around the world.
