In 2015, Minnesota had a record $711 million in unclaimed property. They're working hard to get this property to the Minnesota citizens who rightfully own this property, which could have your name on it and you didn't even know it!

According to the State of Minnesota, 1 in 20 citizens have at least $100 in this pool of unclaimed property and didn't have any idea that it's rightfully theirs. The state wants you to claim this property, which isn't very difficult to claim.

Each year, Commerce receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property from businesses and organizations that have lost contact with the owners. Our Department is responsible for safeguarding the funds or property until claimed by the rightful owners or heirs.

You may be thinking that there's no way you would have money in there, you may be surprised. A few years ago I had $200 unclaimed in there, and as recent as last year my Father had just over $100 that had his name on it. Common types of unclaimed property can include:

  • Dormant bank accounts
  • Un-cashed checks
  • Unclaimed wages
  • Safe deposit box
  • Insurance claim payments or benefits
  • Stocks or bonds

It's worth a shot to look at least! The process is actually very simple -- just enter your name and state in the missingmoney.com website form and click "search", then follow the steps to claim your property. While you're at it, search for everybody you know. It's likely one of them will have something in there at least!
