Neil Young’s ‘A Letter Home’ Expanded For Deluxe Box Set

Reprise Records

Neil Young‘s just-released ‘A Letter Home’ will be expanded into a massive box set, including the original vinyl version, a hi-res audiophile edition, a standard compact disc, booklet and a DVD that chronicles the album’s unique recording process.

Young recorded this low-tech collection of covers live to one-track inside a refurbished 1947 Voice-O-Graph mono recording facility at Jack White‘s Third Man Records in Nashville. Not much larger than a vintage phone booth, it apparently provided the perfect throwback setting for Young’s look back.

In a news release this morning from Reprise Records, Young calls the album “an unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro-mechanical technology [that] captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever.”

The ‘A Letter Home’ limited-edition deluxe box set is due from Reprise on May 27. Young says he chose songs that connected on a deeper level. Bert Jansch’s ‘Needle of Death,’ for instance, was an inspiration for Young’s classic ‘Needle and the Damage Done.’ Other selections range from Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson to Don Everly and Bruce Springsteen. Young opens each side with a spoken-word introduction, setting the tone for this most personal of album projects.
