Neil is a huge contributor of some superb songs that were included on Buffalo Springfield's debut album from 1966.However; lead vocals on the songs he penned "Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It," "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong" and “Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" were that of Richie Furay, (rhythm guitarist and singer). Richie also had a big part in forming Buffalo Springfield.

Neil primarily concentrated on playing lead guitar on the album, however; he did take the lead vocals on his songs, “Burned” and “Out Of My Mind."
