After leaving the Buffalo Springfield, Neil began playing solo performances  before hooking up with Crazy Horse.

One of those solo performances was that of  Sugar Mountain – Live at Canterbury House 1968 which was released  in 2008.

This would be the title track and would prove to be one of his most beloved songs. The song reflects on youth and aging. The lyric, “You can’t be twenty on Sugar Mountain,” tells us the Canadian youth club that Neil used to frequent.

It barred anyone who had reached the dreaded age of twenty, a set of lyrics that strongly catered to teenagers.

Joni Mitchell wrote a classic song of her own in regards to the same topic titled, “The Circle Game."
