Nikki Sixx and Slash Win Golden Gods Awards

Motley Crue‘s Nikki Sixx and Slash each received awards for their skills with stringed musical instruments on the Revolver Golden Gods awards last night (April 11). Slash was declared ‘Riff Lord’ and Sixx won the Paul Gray Best Bassist honor.

The former Guns N’ Roses hero beat out Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Zakk Wylde, Korn’s Munky (??), Dave Grohl and Eddie Van Halen for the ‘Riff Lord’ title. We repeat, somebody beat Eddie Van Halen for the title of ‘Riff Lord,’ and it wasn’t Tony Iommi or Jimmy Page. Uh-huh. Slash gave shout-outs to his competitors in his brief and modest acceptance speech: “I was honored to even be nominated for this, I’m humbled to win, thank you very much.”

Earlier in the night, he was also very polite, declining to weigh in as Dee Snider unloaded on Axl Rose for his refusal to appear at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this weekend. Later in the show, Slash let the music do the talking with a four-song set that included a duet on ‘School’s Out’ with Alice Cooper.

Sixx beat out Anthrax’s Frank Bello, Michael Anthony of Chickenfoot, his Van Halen replacement Wolfgang, Fieldy from Korn (stop it already!) and Megadeth’s David Ellefson for the Best Bassist award, named after the deceased Slipknot hero.

“First of all, I know this was voted on by the fans, which means the most to me personally,” Sixx declared thankfully. “I didn’t want to be a drummer, didn’t want to be a singer, I wanted to be a bass player, and I’m going to be carrying on till I drop.”

He then went on to present one of his heroes and friends, Kiss bassist Gene Simmons, with the Golden God award. A short while later — and please don’t ask us to explain the difference between the two honors — Rush was handed the Lifetime Achievement award by the mighty Tenacious D.
