Every time we talk classic rock we manage to always mention groups like The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Styx, John Fogerty, Deep Purple, Rod Stewart, and Judas Priest before it's all said and done.
Once in awhile I have to feature a more modern band on "Metal After Midnight" just because there's some great stuff still coming out. "Spiritual Beggars" aren't what I consider true "Metal" by definition anymore, but it was 1971 they'd be one of the heaviest bands out there.

Most Metalheads would say that "Black Sabbath" are the true kings of Heavy Metal. Their debut was darker and heavier than anything out there at the time. Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were more bluesy than the strait forward riffs of Black Sabbath.
There's a starting point for everything in life and for Deep Purple it all got under way in 1968. Ever wonder what can we do next (?) well with Deep Purple the new album is appropriately titled, 'Now What?!'
It's been an up-and-down year between Deep Purple fans and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- the band was finally nominated for induction into the Hall, but didn't make it in. Keyboard player Don Airey seems to be taking it all in stride, though; as he put it during a recent interview, "I don't think the band really care, actually."
