UPDATE: Minnesota State Patrol Responds to Hundreds of Crashes

UNDATED – The Minnesota State Patrol says, as of 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, they’ve responded to 239 crashes statewide.  Thirty-two of them involved injuries, but none were serious or deadly.  They also assisted with 398 incidents where vehicles spun out or left the road.  And they also had two semis jacknife.

The next update from the Minnesota State Patrol will be at 6:00 a.m. on Monday.

Sergeant Jason Burke from the St. Cloud Police Department says they are advising people to stay home. If you absolutely have to be out on the roads, remember to turn your headlights on.  He says the plows are out, but they are only doing the main roads, and are having a hard time keeping up with the snowfall.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, they’re dealing with a number of vehicles that have gone into the ditch all along Interstate 94.  There was also a crash this morning just south of St. Cloud on I-94 between Highway 15 and County Road 171.

The roads in the St. Cloud area area listed as in “difficult” condition right now.  From western Stearns county and further to the west they are listed in “hazardous” condition.

Meanwhile, freezing rain, sleet and snow have created difficult driving conditions in the Twin Cities and cancelled dozens of flights to and from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Northern Minnesota is also seeing heavy snow, and could see up to 12 inches by the time the system has moved through.

Blizzard warnings will be in effect from Sunday night through 6 a.m. Monday in areas including New Ulm and Worthington.

Airport spokesman Pat Hogan says that as of Sunday morning, more than 50 flights had already been cancelled.

Winds are also expected to pick up from the north, which could create visibility issues.
