There have been tons of cool progressive rock bands out there over the years: Dream Theater, Mastodon, and Porcupine Tree among others. The genre has taken on a life of it’s own over the past few decades, and there is really only one band to thank for that.

The group in question dear reader, is Rush. Before rush came along, prog rock was a rather small movement in the world of radio friendly music. Bands like King Crimson, Yes, and Genesis had a degree of measurable success back in the day, but none of them re-invented the genre like Rush did.

There’s a reason why “Moving Pictures” is hailed as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. It’s only 6 tunes, but it’s a flawless effort from beginning to end. I remember when I was 13 and got my hands on it for the first time. I was nothing short of enthralled with “Moving Pictures.” The technical skill and musical innovation blew me away, and I’ve been a huge fan of the band ever since.

The power trio retired last year, which means I’ll never get the opportunity to see them live. Fortunately, for myself and other admirers of Rush, we’ll get to see all those classic tunes covered by Spindrift on May 11th at the Le Musique Room in St. Michael. The show starts at 8 pm and you can get your tickets now for $26.
