From playing ‘Mama Kin’ and ‘Train Kept A Rollin” with one set of his heroes earlier in the week to rocking out to ‘Ace of Spades’ with another, you can say that it’s been quite the four-day stretch for former Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash.
Last night, in a set-ending cameo no one saw coming, the ‘Cat in the Hat’ emerged from behind the curtain at Club Nokia in Los Angeles to jam with legendary English metal pioneers Motorhead on their signature song. Slash, took his place center stage with guitarist Phil “Wizzo” Campbell on one side and lead singer and bassist Lemmy Kilmister – looking and sounding in fine form – grinding it out on the other. When the solo hit, all eyes turned to him as he launched into a masterfully erratic, blazing lead that no doubt left a few jaws on the floor.
The evening was not the first time Slash has worked with Lemmy, of course, as the latter lent his vocals to the track ‘Doctor Alibi’ on the guitarist’s 2010 solo debut record. Speaking to Music Radar, Slash later related what it meant to have his hero contribute to that song in particular. “I made sure there was Jack Daniels and potato chips and he went into the control room with Eric Valentine and belted it out. I had no idea what the lyrics were until after he’d done it. It’s a special song to me because it’s a song that speaks to him and it also speaks for me up until a particular point it my life. It has a poignant message for me.”
Slash will return to play a few tracks with Motorhead at both of their Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival shows tomorrow (April 13) and April 20 at 9:50PM Pacific in Indio, California.
