Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban knows a thing or billion about becoming suddenly stupid-rich. So it figures that he's offering advice to the eventual winner(s) of the Powerball jackpot, which is - as of this writing - up to $1.5 billion. Oddly-enough, none of his tips involve buying a major sports franchise.

  1. First things first: DO hire a tax attorney. You have the cabbage to burn, so might as well make sure you don't accidentally dodge taxes or something. Even if jail for the rich is much nicer than jail for the poor, you want to be not-jailed in order to enjoy your unearnings.
  2. DO NOT take the lump sum. Even though it's "only" an estimated $800+ million, Cuban recommends you take the annuity so that you don't blow it all and end up like the unfortunately-stereotypical lottery winners of the past.
  3. If you were not already happy, winning won't make you happy. Money doesn't buy you happiness you don't already have (although some would beg to differ).
  4. If you were already happy, you will only be happier if you win. Life gets even easier when you don't have to worry about bills (unless you take the lump sum and blow it all).
  5. Learn and love the word, "NO". Tell it to all of your friends and family. You will already know the needs of people truly close to you. If you do decide to give some money to friends and family, do it right off the bat and then tell them "no more". And, of course, stick to it.
  6. Winning the lottery doesn't make you a smart investor (even though your investment of (at least) $2 brought a $1+ billion return). Cuban says don't invest your winnings. Put it in the bank and live comfortably forever. No need to be greedy YOU'RE A FRICKING (almost) BILLIONAIRE!

So there you have it. Win, take the annuity, don't give it away to friends & family, hire a tax lawyer, and get comfy. Not bad advice.

And with money like that, you can afford court-side Timberwolves seats and yell at the refs!
