ST. CLOUD - The St. Cloud city council has voted to hold a study session in October on the possibility of changing the tobacco buying age, instead of holding a public hearing.

During Monday night's meeting the council was scheduled to set a public hearing on October 9th to discuss the issue.  However, they instead voted to talk more about the topic during their next study session in October, and then hold a public hearing on November 9th.

Earlier this year Edina became the first city in the state to require the buyer of tobacco products be at least 21 years old.  City Administrator Matt Staehling says St. Cloud looked at that ordinance as a guideline for a possible change to our ordinance.

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis says he does not support a change to the city's ordinance because in part, it doesn't change the age for using tobacco just buying it.
