ST. CLOUD -- The Stearns County Board of Commissioners has decided how to fill the sheriff's term left vacant with the retirement of John Sanner.

Commissioners approved a motion on a 3-2 vote to open up an application process for those wishing to serve as sheriff.

Applicants will have until April 28th to submit their names for consideration. A screening committee will review those applications and submit up to five candidates to the county's personnel director on May 2nd to be reviewed.

On May 9th, commissioners will select up to five candidates to be interviewed. Interviews will then take place the following week on May 16th.

The county board will appoint a new sheriff at their May 23rd board meeting. That officer will then fill the position of sheriff until the term expires December 31st, 2018.
