Sting Won’t ‘Impersonate’ Art Garfunkel on Tour With Paul Simon

Sting and Paul Simon will begin their co-headlining tour next month, and even though the logistics have been worked out, there’s still a major question to be resolved. The stars haven’t figured out yet which songs they’ll perform together.

ABC News Radio reports that Sting said that they are “figuring that out as we go along,” but ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ is likely to be one of the songs, and he’s hoping they can do ‘America’ at some point. However, Sting is very careful not to tread on sacred turf belonging to Simon’s former partner.

“Paul had a long partnership with Art Garfunkel for many, many years, and it’s not my job to impersonate Art,” he said. “He has one of the most iconic, beautiful voices in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. But my job is to interpret and honor the notes and the lyrics that have been written, and I will be me.”

Sting noted that Simon is interested in singing tracks from the “gentler side of my repertoire,” including ‘Fields of Gold’ and ‘Fragile.’ Still, don’t expect to see Sting donning a large orange curly wig any time soon, even if, as a 2009 episode of ‘Flight of the Conchords‘ pointed out, it has its advantages.
