The man behind the lens for The Who's legendary rock opera, Tommy has died. 

British film director Ken Russell died in his sleep Sunday night at the age of 84.

Tommy starred Roger Daltrey in the title role, but also other big names such as: Eric Clapton (The Preacher), Elton John (The Pinball Wizard), Jack Nicholson (A. Quackson), Tina Turner (Acid Queen) and the other members of The Who.

Russell was also the Oscar winning director for 1969's Women in Love, 1971's The Devils and 1980's Altered States.

Most recently, Russell was writing the script and casting for another musical adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.
