ST. CLOUD – Today we continue our countdown of the top ten news stories of 2013. Coming in at number two is the St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team and their run to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh last season.

The Huskies earned their first-ever MacNaughton Cup as regular season champions of the WCHA in their final year of membership in the conference. SCSU left the WCHA for the newly created National Collegiate Hockey Conference, which began play in 2013.

The Huskies finished the regular season with a 25-16-1 record, then suffered a disappointing 4-1 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers in the WCHA Final Five at Xcel Energy Center. Despite the early exit, SCSU was selected to play in the NCAA Tournament at a regional in Toledo, Ohio.

St. Cloud State overwhelmed both of their opponents in the regional round of the tournament, routing Notre Dame 5-1 before posting a 4-1 win over Miami University in the second round to reach the Frozen Four.

The game itself did not go according to plan, however, with the Huskies losing in their semifinal match up with Quinnipiac by a 4-1 final score on Thursday, April 11th.

SCSU did receive quite the consolation prize on April 12th, as senior forward Drew LeBlanc of Hermantown was awarded the school’s first ever Hobey Baker Award. LeBlanc currently plays for the Chicago Blackhawks organization.
