We use certain terms all the time but really never give any thought to where the term came from. Since we are right in the middle of pothole season and we will hear the term pothole quite often, mostly with some sort of profane adjective preceding it . According to legend, hundreds of years ago, the streets in old Europe where paved with clay. Whenever it rained heavily the streets and roads would get wet and sloppy. People would then go out into the streets and dig up clay to make pottery. Thus the term pothole. So next time the subject of potholes comes up, show everyone just how freakin' smart you are. And on a related note, did you know that if you find a pothole, you can call the city and they will come out and repair it. They don't really tell us when they'll fix it but they will fix it.
