The Minnesota Wild lost 3-2 (1-0 in shootout) to the Washington Capitals Thursday night in Washington, DC. St. Cloud native Nate Schmidt played nearly 24 minutes and dished up two hits in the game.

Alexander Ovechkin scored for the Caps on the power play at the 8:10 mark of the first period for a 1-0 lead.

The Wild responded with a power play goal of their own with just over two minutes left in the opening period. Charlie Coyle notched his first goal of the season with assists credited to Zach Parise and Mikko Koivu.

Minnesota took a 2-1 lead six minutes in to the second period on Mikael Granlund's second goal of the season.

However, the Wild allowed the Caps to tie the game with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.

Washington center Nicklas Backstrom beat Josh Harding for the lone shootout goal.

The Wild return to the ice on Saturday when they head to Raleigh to face the Carolina Hurricanes.
