Yoko Ono Launches New John Lennon-Inspired Fashion Line

Yoko Ono demonstrated that she is every bit as talented at fashion design as she is in her musical pursuits with the launch of her new John Lennon-inspired fashion line on Tuesday night (Nov. 27) in New York City.

As Spin reports, Ono originally began to sketch out a line of clothes that expressed her love for the legendary Beatle in 1969. She met Humberto Leon of the clothier Opening Ceremony at the opening of their Tokyo store three years ago, and the two began planning to bring the line to fruition, 43 years after it was first conceived — and luckily for fans of odd clothing, just in time for the holidays.

Ono retains the oddball artistic sensibility that drove such classic hits as ‘Don’t Worry, Kyoko (Mummy’s Only Looking For Her Hand in the Snow)‘ for the collection, which unabashedly celebrates her favorite parts of Lennon’s anatomy. Many of the styles feature recurring design themes that draw attention to the crotch and butt, as well as the nipples in some notable cases.

“She, in a very simple manner, wanted to celebrate the body parts of John that she felt were exciting to her. So yes, they are elements that people could be shier about, but I feel like that’s kind of the beauty of it,” Leon states. “It’s very bold, it’s trying to show the things that are slightly more intimate, some more than others. We really wanted to play around with that. In so many ways these are expressions of her as a conceptual artist and there’s a reality as well as an art side that I really appreciate.”

This is a limited collection with only 52 pieces available in each style, so if you’re a big fan of weird, vaguely disquieting clothing that wouldn’t exist but for the famous name attached to it, you’d better get going on over to the Opening Ceremony website and check out the entire collection while supplies last. ‘Cause, you know, we’re sure there won’t be more later if this succeeds  –  that would just be exploitative.
