Turning its back on the pschyedelic sound of the time, Creedence held fast to a rootsy sound that connected with listeners craving well crafted songs performed with a more vigor type style.

Proud Mary

If any one song were to define the CCR sound I would have to say it's the song, "Proud Mary."

"Proud Mary" was released in 1969 (January) and rapidly climbed the charts stopping at #2.

As powerful of a song that it was, it again made it's way as a Top Ten single when covered by Ike and Tina Turner which scored them a Grammy for best R&B vocal for a group in 1972.
