A Special Landmark Just Popped Up 2 Hours From St. Cloud
I seem to be fascinated by all things roadside. I'm always on the hunt for someplace new to enjoy, and a small Minnesota town, about 2 hours from St. Cloud, just added a very special landmark that might be worth the trip. The home to Minnesota's largest loon and the 'Hairyman', Vergas, has erected the 8th freedom rock in Minnesota, and it is gorgeous!
There is a new artistic landmark in Otter Tail County, MN. There is a Freedom Rock in Vergas, MN in the Veterans Memorial Park. According the The Freedom Rock Facebook page, this is the 8th Freedom Rock in Minnesota. When we stopped by last week, they were working on the structure under which the rock is housed. The artwork is exquisite and there is a story behind all of the images on display. Yet another reason to visit Vergas this fall.
When I lived in Southern Minnesota, on the MN/IA border 10 years ago, Freedom Rocks were just starting to be discussed, and as soon as I saw the first one, I was hooked.
The symbolism isn't lost on me by using a rock, something that is the foundation for homes, schools, and businesses. But at the same time that large cold rock looks almost fragile after it has been painted.
You can learn more about the Vergas rock below.
There are 7 other Freedom Rocks in Minnesota, here are the cities they are located either in, or close by.
- Albert Lea
- Kasson
- Winnebago
- Norwood Young America
- Lakeville
- Blaine
- Big Lake
The newest Freedom Rock is located in Veterans Memorial Park, here's the address, on Frazee Ave.
