Jackson Browne wrote this song about his alter ego.  It's about his wilder, more exciting alter ego he needed to keep up with his wild girlfriend.  Elton john played keyboards on this recording but because he had no work visa yet for the U.S. he used the name Rockaday Johnny in the credits.  Glen Frey sang harmonies on the song.  A year earlier Browne had given Frey the song "Take it Easy" which became the first single from The Eagles.
