Baxter’s Attic, New Riders of the Purple Sage “Panama Red”
This may be one of the few songs and album that can spark a flashback back to the early 70's. I remember when The Adventures of Panama Red came out and listening to it as often as possible.
The New Riders of the Purple Sage originally was formed by Garcia,, Lesh and Hart as a way for them to explore the tastes for country music. Rising from the psychedelic stronghold of San Francisco, California the band originally consisted of Jerry Garcia on pedal steel, Lesh on bass guitar, John Dawson on rhythm guitar and vocals, David Nelson on vocals and guitar and even a little mandolin and Hart on Drums.
Eventually, Dave Torbert replaced Lesh and Spencer Dryden, ex Jefferson Starship, replaced Hart on drums. .
NRPS often opened for the Grateful Dead and had Jerry Garcia doing double duty. Garcia left the band in 1971.
