Grants For Quick Community Improvements Are Here Again
Changes that matter most in a community don’t always come from waiting years for big funding or long, drawn-out loan approvals.
Sometimes they come from small but meaningful ideas that are ready to go right now.
What kinds of things am I talking about? Maybe a few benches being placed in a public space where someone can rest. What about a garden where people can find solace and heal from the loss of a loved one?
Or it could be a safer crosswalk in an area of concern, which makes a daily walk feel less risky. These are the kinds of ideas that can quietly transform our neighborhoods.
Right now, AARP is offering a way to make these kinds of important changes happen.
THE 2026 AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE IS ON NOW
The 2026 AARP Community Challenge is officially underway, and applications are now open. The Community Challenge is a grant program designed to help communities become more livable for people of all ages by supporting real, tangible improvements that can be completed quickly. It’s about seeing a need, having an idea, and being empowered to act on it without waiting years for the changes to become active.

PROJECTS THAT DON'T JUST SIT ON PAPER
Now in its 10th year, the AARP Community Challenge has already invested $24.3 million through more than 2,100 grants across all 50 states. These projects don’t sit on paper. They show up in our neighborhoods, parks, sidewalks, senior centers, and gathering spaces where people live their everyday lives.
WHAT MAKES THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE UNIQUE?
What makes this program unique is how fast it moves. Communities have just eight weeks to apply, and once awarded, only six months to bring the project to life. That timeline creates urgency, but it also creates action. Instead of long delays, communities see real improvements on the ground in a matter of months.

EASING UP ON THE WRITING PROCESS
For those of you who have taken on the challenge of filing for a grant in the past, you know that it can be an absolutely daunting challenge. AARP is making this process MUCH easier, so you can get your requests in, and they can get the funding out to our Minnesota communities.
WHAT CAN THESE COMMUNITY GRANTS BE USED FOR?
Across the country, improvements have been simple but powerful. More than 1,700 benches have been added to public spaces, offering places to rest and connect. Over 2,000 garden beds have been built, creating spaces to plant gardens and grow healthy food, see outdoor beauty, and offer a place for reflection.
Hundreds of crosswalk and sidewalk safety upgrades have helped people feel more confident getting where they need to go. Nearly 40,000 volunteers have stepped up to help make these projects possible, strengthening community ties along the way.
HOW HAVE THESE AARP FUNDS HELPED MINNESOTA?
Minnesota has already seen what this kind of support can do. Since 2017, communities across the state have received 45 AARP Community Challenge grants totaling more than $558,000. Those grants average around $12,000 each. The impact of the small grants has stretched far beyond the dollar amount.
- In Hutchinson, a grant helped launch an on-demand transportation program for adults 50 and older and people with disabilities, making it easier to get to medical appointments and essential services.
- In Mahnomen County, accessibility upgrades at a senior living center made everyday movement safer and more independent for residents.
- Cities like Newfolden and Sleepy Eye focused on public gathering spaces, improving walkability, adding seating, and creating welcoming places for people of all generations to spend time together.
THE BIGGER CHANGE
These projects may look small on the surface, but they often lead to much bigger change. Nearly half of AARP Community Challenge grantees go on to secure additional funding, bringing in more than $23 million in extra support.
Most projects help communities overcome policy or financial barriers by showing what’s possible. Every project increases awareness, builds partnerships, and creates momentum that lasts well beyond the initial grant.
WHERE CAN THESE COMMUNITY GRANTS BE USED?
Forty percent of AARP's Community Grants support rural communities. Another 40 percent go to urban areas, and the remaining 20 percent serve suburban neighborhoods. Rural communities in particular have seen strong success, with hundreds of grants awarded nationwide since the program began.

YOU CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Sometimes change doesn’t start with a big announcement. Sometimes it starts with one idea, one application, and a community willing to take the next step. I think that we are lucky to live in central Minnesota, because I know many of you care so much about this area. Don't hesitate! You may NOT get a yes this year, but on the other hand, you might get a big YES, and start making change before you ever thought it possible. Everything starts with action. Good luck.
