26th Anniversary of “Kitschy” Movie Filmed in Minnesota
It's always fun to see movies that center around things in Minnesota. You might feel like "Hey- I know where that is". It just adds a cool factor around a flick that you might go and see in a theatre, originally. Then streaming afterwards.
Although in this case, streaming seems to be a bit elusive. More on that coming up.
I'm talking about the movie "Drop Dead Gorgeous" that came out in 1999. The movie had a great cast, including Denise Richards, Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin, and Allison Janney. Plus a few others that are recognizable.
FICTIONAL TOWN
The movie takes place in the fictional town of Mount Rose, Minnesota. Some people have said that it's Montrose, which is a town in Wright County. But it's supposed to be totally fictional, so it's Mount Rose. Centering around a beauty pageant where things go horribly and hilariously wrong.
MOVIE FILMED IN MINNESOTA
The film was shot throughout the Carver County area, mainly in Waconia, Minnesota, although names of real Minnesota communities were shown on the sashes of contestants later in the movie.
INSPIRATION
As you can see in the above post, the relationship between Kirsten Dunst and her on screen mother, Ellen Barkin was the inspiration for the series the Gilmore Girls which starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. That series ran from 2000 to 2006.
STREAMING??
If you are interested in watching this movie, just to relive the fact that it was filmed here in Minnesota, you might have some trouble. It's not available through any streaming network, unless you pay for it.
Found this answer after Google answered my question.
Drop Dead Gorgeous" is not currently available on many major streaming platforms because it was pulled from services like HBOMax. While it was once briefly available on Hulu, it has since been removed. It is available for purchase on platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Vudu. You can also find it for rental on DVD at Scarecrow Video. The reason for its removal from streaming services is not explicitly stated, but it is noted that the film was distributed by New Line Cinema, a WarnerMedia-owned brand.
This is a little annoying. Since now, pretty much any movie you'd like to see is through a streaming network. But it is available for purchase, apparently. Thanks.
