When I was a kid, I was absolutely enamored by magic (as most kids are.) There was something mind boggling and inspiring about seeing a magic trick performed before your eyes. When I was 7 years old, a family friend came over to my parents’ house and showed me some tricks he had been working on.

Of course, as a child, I thought that he was a legitimate numinous figure from another dimension. It wasn’t until he gifted me a magic instruction book that explained how to do all of the tricks that he had showed me that I figured out that magic wasn’t really magic. In some ways, this actually made magic more interesting for me.

Once I realized that there was a rational explanation for every illusion, it became pretty fun to try to figure out how magicians were doing each of their tricks. For a brief period I tried my hand at magic, but it didn’t take very long for me to figure out that it wasn’t my calling.

Nevertheless I still have a special place in my heart for the craft, and my inner child still lights up when I see magic done well. If you’re looking for something to entertain the kiddos this Spring you might want to check out the “One Hour One Act Family Show” by magician and illusionist Jason Bishop.

It’s designed specifically for those kids who find “60 minutes and done” to be just the right formula. He’ll be performing at the Paramount Theatre in St. Cloud on May 6th with a performance at 1 p.m. and another at 3:30 p.m. Tickets cost between $6 and $14 and are on sale now.
