If you were at the Como Zoo and Conservatory two days ago, you may have witnessed a sloth named Sago give birth.  This was not quite expected at this time, but all is well with the two toed sloth and her newborn.

Yesterday, visitors at Como witnessed something truly special—Sago, our Hoffman’s two-toed sloth, gave birth on exhibit! Mom and baby are doing great, and while we don’t know the little one’s gender yet, we’re excited to watch them bond.

Sloth babies will attach to their mom for up to a year, and then they are fairly independant after that. This sloth is a first time mom and is doing great according to the Como Zoo's website

I remember going to the Como Zoo often when I was a kid, and I never got to witness something nearly this cool.  My most vivid memory is a gross one.  I remember on a class trip. like in second grade, we got to go to the Como Zoo.  Everyone was excited to see the animals.  But in the gorilla house, there was a big gorilla who ate a banana over and over again, if you catch what I mean there.  Yuck.  And that is the memory that sticks with me.  The sloth giving birth is SO MUCH BETTER!!

The birth is also a great teaching moment fo the miracle of life for everyone who was there at the zoo on Wednesday,

Congratulations Sago!
