It’s only been a few days since we kicked off 2019, and we all know what that means, don’t we? It means that you started working on your New Year’s resolution and failed miserably. It’s okay. We’ve all been there. Did you know that 80%  of people who take on resolutions fail by February? Pretty disheartening, huh? But don’t fret, I’m going to share a few tips with you to keep you on track! Here we go.

1. The 20 Second Rule

Shawn Achor, author of “The Happiness Advantage” discovered that a mere extra 20 seconds (roughly, the amount of time it takes to start engaging in any given activity) is typically enough time to discourage people from getting started. He found that if you reduce the amount of time it takes to start doing something by 20 seconds, you’re more likely to do it every day. For example: Instead of keeping your guitar locked away in the closet, try keeping on a stand next to the couch.

2. Take More Breaks To Be More Productive

A study in “The Journal Of Applied Psychology” discovered that taking short breaks in your activity of choice every couple of hours, led to greater productivity. Overworking often leads to an increase in stress hormones and exhaustion.

3. Be Patient When Forming New Habits

The old saying is true. Patience is a virtue. Pop science has infamously stated that it takes only one month to form a new habit, but a British researcher recently discovered that it actually takes closer to 66 days. That may seem like a long time, but if you can consistently work a new habit into your routine for just a couple of months, it’ll seem like second nature.
