A recent study done by SmartAsset has crunched the numbers, and it turns out you'll need a pretty hefty household income to cover the necessities, have some money for the fun stuff, and still put something away for the future in Minnesota.

What Does "Living Comfortably" Actually Mean?

First, there's an important distinction here. The SmartAsset study isn't estimating the bare minimum a family needs to survive or simply cover basic expenses.

The study focused on necessities like housing, child care, transportation, health care, and taxes, then applied the popular 50/30/20 budgeting rule -- 50% of a household's budget goes toward necessities, 30% is available for discretionary spending or "wants," and the remaining 20% goes toward savings or paying down debt.

In other words, these numbers represent SmartAsset's estimate of what a family needs to live comfortably, not simply make ends meet.

What Salary Does a Family of Four Need to Live Comfortably in the U.S.?

Nationally, SmartAsset estimates a family of four needs a combined annual salary of about $250,000 to live comfortably in the United States.

The five most expensive states for a family of four are:

1. Massachusetts: $329,555
2. Hawaii: $313,165
3. California: $302,682
4. New Jersey: $295,110
5. New York: $291,533

How Much Does a Family of Four Need to Live Comfortably in Minnesota?

Minnesota offers everything from small-town living to the Twin Cities metro, so actual household expenses can obviously vary quite a bit depending on where you live.

But statewide, the study estimates a family of four with two working adults and two children needs a combined annual income of $263,078 to live comfortably in Minnesota.

That's more than a quarter-million dollars a year. And it's also considerably higher than what families need in neighboring Wisconsin and Iowa.

What Salary Does a Family of Four Need in Wisconsin?

Looking through the cheddar curtain at our neighbors to the east, the study estimates a family of four needs a combined annual salary of $238,451 to live comfortably in Wisconsin.

That's about $24,600 less per year than Minnesota, or roughly 9 percent lower.

How Much Does a Family of Four Need in Iowa?

Turning south to Iowa, the estimated household salary needed to live comfortably drops even further. SmartAsset puts the number at $204,422 for a family of four in Iowa.

That's nearly $58,700 less per year than Minnesota, or about 22 percent lower.

The five states with the lowest salaries needed for a family of four to live comfortably are:

2. Kentucky: $194,854
3. Arkansas: $195,437
4. Tennessee: $197,267
5. Louisiana: $197,933
