Superintendent Brad Bergstrom says they recognized his accomplishment of making the national bee at a school board meeting.

We honored him at a board meeting last month.  Most of the time, when we honor students for unique things that they've done, we tell them they are more than welcome to stay, but they mostly leave.  He sat for the whole meeting because he was intrigued by the meeting.

Bergstrom says when he was asked about how he prepares for a spelling bee, Nguyen responded that he just reads a lot.

This is the first time ever that the Sauk Rapids-Rice School District has sent a student to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The preliminary rounds begin on Tuesday, with the semi-finals on Wednesday, and the finals on Thursday. The semi-finals and finals will air live on ION TV at 7:00 p.m. each night.
