Have We Collectively Forgotten How To Make A Left Turn? [OPINION]
Has anyone else noticed the way drivers have seemingly forgotten how to safely (and courteously) make a left turn at a stoplight? Am I the only one bothered by this?
Where we used to make a nice, clean and predictable 90 degree angle to turn left, we are now barely turning at 45 degrees, oftentimes even cutting into the oncoming traffic lane itself in the process!
Every time I am stopped at a red light I make sure to be at least a foot or two behind the white line, but lately that doesn't feel like enough with giant SUVs coming within centimeters of my front bumper! Heck, there was a time last week in Sartell that I thought a fellow making a left turn was going to side-swipe me, and I was in the opposite RIGHT turn lane!
I don't remember this being an issue before our vehicles evolved Godzilla-style from Geo Metros and Ford Tauruses to Hummers and Grand Wagoneers, but now I am white-knuckling the steering wheel every time I stop at a red!
Approach for a left turn on other than one-way roadways shall be made in that portion of the right half of the roadway nearest the centerline thereof, and after entering the intersection the left turn shall be made so as to leave the intersection to the right of the centerline of the roadway being entered.
Whenever practicable the left turn shall be made in that portion of the intersection to the left of the center of the intersection.
Has this been an issue for anyone else?
