Learn How To Make One Of The World’s Oldest Novelties
When I was a kid, arguably my favorite activity was playing with Beyblades. Beyblades were spinning tops that you could customize and battle your friends with. I spent years playing with those darn toys, and made my parents spend a lot of their hard earned cash on my addiction.
I put a lot of time into customizing the ultimate Beyblade and battled against my friends every weekend. It was at one time my deepest ambition to become the Beyblade World Champion (a goal I never quite reached.) Alas, I eventually grew up and packed my beloved tops away in a keeps-sake chest.
Nevertheless, I still harbor a great deal of fondness for that period of my childhood. Anytime I see anything related to my favorite childhood toy, part of me lights up inside. Needless to say, my inner 9 year old was giddy when I stumbled onto the “Wood-Turning Sampler: Tops” event. The class will introduce you to the tradition of woodturning in this exploratory class for beginners (such as myself.)
Your instructor will walk you through safely using a lathe and chisels to create a variety of simple cuts in the wood and each student will create two toy tops to take home. I know it sounds childish, but I think this sounds like a lot of fun. You can take the class on April 10th from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Paramount Visual Arts Center for $35.
