Minnesota Roads Have Been Deadly For Pedestrians This Year
When you hear the term deadly roads, most of us think about accidents involving only vehicles, but the truth is, we should also consider vehicles involved with pedestrians. As many people as there are walking about the St. Cloud area, it should be more in the forefront of our minds.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation took to social media earlier this week and said that as of Monday, there have been 35 people killed crossing the street thus far this year around the state. 35! That’s sounds like a lot of people to me.
The Department of Transportation issued these reminders about how to be safe, because both drivers and pedestrians have a responsibility to help keep each other safe.
What Walkers Should Do:
- When crossing roadways, try to cross in a well-lit area
- Make sure you really look closely for oncoming traffic
- When you’re trying to cross the street in an area where other vehicles are parked along the roadway, stand clear of parked cars and other obstacles
- Continue to look for traffic as you make your way across the road
What Drivers Should Do:
- Come to a stop when pedestrians are crossing the road near you
- Don’t just look for traffic when looking to make moves on the road, remember the people who are walking
- Be expecting to encounter walkers, especially when the weather is better
- Driver at slower speeds in areas where walkers are known to be more popular
- Before passing stopped vehicles, make sure you’re checking for pedestrians too
These may sound like simple or obvious things that everyone knows, but it doesn’t hurt to have a reminder, especially when it comes to avoiding a tragic accident.
