From time to time, PETA tends to get a bit out of hand.  I remember a few years back when they wanted us to stop mowing our lawns because it disturbed the insects. At first I thought it was a joke but nope.

Peta is constantly trying to gain any publicity they can, which exactly why the come up with these crazy ideas. Here is part of a letter PETA sent to Ham Lake Mayor Mike Van Kirk;

Pigs killed for food spend their lives confined on filthy factory farms and are denied everything that’s natural and important to them, such as nurturing their young and rooting in the earth. Pigs’ tails are chopped off, their teeth are cut with pliers, and males are castrated, all without painkillers. Sows are kept in “iron maidens”—named after medieval torture devices—and chew endlessly at the metal bars just inches in front of their faces. They cannot turn around or take even two steps in any direction. At slaughterhouses, pigs are hung upside down and bled to death, often while still conscious.

Okay, granted, all that stuff is terrible but has nothing to do with Ham Lake, which was actually named in that 1871 because the shape of the lake resembled that of a ham.  Peta suggested that Ham Lake change their name to Yam Lake because the lake is more the shape of a yam and yams are "super-healthy foods high in fiber, potassium, manganese, and antioxidants—definitely something worth promoting!"

PETA even offered to chip in funds to change the town's signs if the name was changed.  They also offered to send the entire town candied yams.

Chances of a name change aren't likely.   I believe I'll just file this away in the WTF File.
